Sri Lanka’s Iconic Rail Journey is making a comeback

,

The iconic Sri Lanka upcountry rail Journey has resumed train services between Nanu-Oya and Badulla.

This brings great news for scenic railway travellers and tourists planning a upcountry train journey in Sri Lanka.

After a lapse of nearly eight months, the upcountry railway track suffered extensive damage following the Ditwah devastation, bringing mainline train services to a halt.

As part of the recovery process, services were first restored between Ambewela and Badulla, and have now been further extended to cover the full stretch from Nanu-Oya to Badulla.

A Scenic 85-Kilometre Rail Journey Through Sri Lanka’s Hill Country

The Nanu-Oya to Badulla train route spans 85 kilometres and is widely regarded as one of the most scenic train journeys in Sri Lanka — and indeed in the world.

Passing through lush forests, rolling tea plantations, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic highland landscapes, this upcountry train ride offers an unforgettable travel experience for both local and international visitors.

Key Stops Along the Nanu-Oya to Badulla Rail Journey

The route features 17 railway stations, each connected to nearby attractions, making it a favorite among travelers exploring Sri Lanka’s hill country. Highlights include:

  • Pattipola Station — The highest railway station in Sri Lanka, situated at an elevation of 1,897.5 metres above sea level.

  • Ambewela Station — The gateway to Horton Plains National Park, World’s End, and the scenic dairy farms of the Ambewela area.

  • Nine Arch Bridge — One of the most photographed railway structures in the world, located along this iconic segment.

Train Schedule: Nanu-Oya to Badulla

Trains operate twice daily in each direction on all weekdays, except Thursdays, when only one service runs in each direction.

Seating and Reservations

Trains on the Nanu-Oya–Badulla route are equipped with first-class air-conditioned compartments and second-class reserved seating.

Seat reservations can be made through Sri Lanka Railways’ online reservation system or at any railway station offering reservation facilities.

Whether you are a railway enthusiast, a nature lover, or a tourist discovering Sri Lanka’s stunning hill country, the Nanu-Oya to Badulla train journey is an experience not to be missed.
