Sri Lanka is ‘affordable’ and beautiful’ says Jim Shockey, The Adventurer , Jim Shockey, a renowned outdoor writer and hunting adventurer, says Sri Lanka is “affordable” and “beautiful.” Shockey made this statement on his ‘X’ account while touring Sri Lanka. The producer of The Professionals, UNCHARTED, and Shock Therapy on the Outdoor Channel is also a well-known big game outfitter. His hunting adventures have spanned six continents and over 50 countries. During his journey in Sri Lanka, the adventurer has shared a series of photographs on his social media accounts, highlighting Sri Lanka as an attractive destination for travelers. Posting a picture on his platforms, he said, “Sri Lanka is beautiful!!! And relatively affordable compared to other countries we’ve visited!” The picture shows him and his wife staying at a seaside hotel. Sri Lanka is an island nation surrounded by the Indian Ocean, offering rich seaside tourism where visitors can enjoy the sun, sand, and sea, along with affordable and quality accommodation. He also seems to have discovered some popular local options to chill and relax, which he described as three of his favorites: “My three favorite beers, at least while we are here in Sri Lanka.” A beer in Sri Lanka at a roadside bar costs around US$2, while at a five-star hotel it may cost about US$4. It is often more economical to purchase from supermarkets or wine and liquor stores, which are widely available in towns and cities across the country. The adventurer, writer, and TV producer did not miss key cultural sites, as he visited the Dambulla Cave Temple, a historic UNESCO World Heritage site located in the central part of the country. “The Awed in Sri Lanka! Dambulla Cave Temple was carved from stone by the Buddhist faithful living in this cave over 2000 years ago,” added Shockey. The Dambulla Cave Temple is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Sri Lanka. The best time to visit is early morning, as there is a climb to reach the temple, and the cooler temperatures make the experience more comfortable. Shockey also appears to be an antique enthusiast. He runs his own museum named Hand of Man at Maple Bay, BC, which showcases natural history, cultural arts, and conservation. He seems particularly interested in the historical heritage of countries. “Anyone know what the shipping cost would be to get this from Sri Lanka to our ‘Hand of Man’ Museum in Canada?” Jim queried on his platforms. The weapon ( The Cannon) he referred to likely dates back to Sri Lanka’s 400-year colonial era, during which the Dutch, Portuguese, and British ruled parts or the entirety of the country. Sri Lanka still preserves much of this colonial legacy, contributing to its cultural diversity. The British influence remains strong in many aspects of the country, while the Dutch and Portuguese have also left significant historical evidence of their presence. The iconic Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a notable example of Dutch architecture, along with Churches and also its architectural presence. For tourists planning to visit Sri Lanka, it is important to find the right local partner to help plan the trip. If you are confident in organizing your own travel, that is also a good option.
