Tourist dies in Sri Lanka after Paramotor Crash: How to Stay Safe Before Flying

,

A tragic and a rare tourist accident in Sri Lanka has killed a Palestinian national, when she tried to experience a paramotor ride.

This incident once again highlighted the importance of safety when participating in adventure tourism activities, and tourists are adviced to check ‘safety’ standards before embarking on ‘Adventure Tourism.’

The 31-year-old Palestinian woman lost her life following a paramotor crash in Bentota, one of Sri Lanka’s most popular beach destinations on the country’s southern coast.

According to local reports, the powered parachute (paramotor) crashed into the sea during a recreational flight operated by a private establishment along Bentota Beach Road.

The Colombian pilot, who was operating the aircraft, survived the accident.

Authorities have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash.

While such incidents are rare, they serve as an important reminder that tourists should carefully assess safety standards before taking part in any adventure activity, including paramotoring.

Bentota in the South is the most famous destination in Sri Lanka for Paramotoring, while Waikkala, Negombo and Kalpitiya, all in the West Coast of the country are also closely follows as a destination for the sport.

What Is Paramotoring?

Paramotoring is a recreational aviation activity where a pilot flies using a powered paraglider attached to a motorized backpack while carrying one passenger or flying solo.

It offers spectacular aerial views and has become increasingly popular among tourists visiting Sri Lanka.

However, like all aviation-based adventure activities, it carries inherent risks and should only be undertaken with qualified operators who follow proper safety procedures.

How Tourists Can Stay Safe Before a Paramotor Flight

Before booking a paramotor ride, consider the following safety measures:

1. Check the Operator’s Credentials

Choose an operator with an established reputation for safety.

  • Verify how long the operator has been conducting paramotor flights.
  • Read recent online reviews from previous customers.
  • Ensure the operator follows recognized safety procedures.

2. Verify the Pilot’s Qualifications

Your safety largely depends on the pilot.

Before flying, ask whether the pilot:

  • Holds the required certifications and licenses.
  • Has substantial flying experience.
  • Has completed recent safety training.
  • Is familiar with local weather and flying conditions.

3. Inspect the Safety Equipment

Never hesitate to ask about the equipment being used.

Ensure that:

  • Helmets are provided and fit properly.
  • Harnesses are secure and in good condition.
  • Safety straps are correctly fastened.
  • Emergency equipment is available where required.

4. Dress Appropriately

Wear practical clothing for the flight.

Recommended:

  • Comfortable clothing.
  • Closed shoes.
  • Sunglasses with a secure strap (if permitted).

Avoid carrying loose items such as:

  • Caps or hats.
  • Scarves.
  • Loose bags.
  • Mobile phones unless securely attached.

5. Pay Attention to the Weather

Weather plays a critical role in aviation safety.

Avoid flying when there are:

  • Strong or gusty winds.
  • Rain or approaching storms.
  • Poor visibility.
  • Unstable weather conditions.

Generally, the safest flying conditions are during:

  • Early morning
  • Late afternoon, when the air is typically calmer and more stable.

6. Attend the Safety Briefing

A professional operator should always conduct a safety briefing before take-off.

The briefing should explain:

  • Take-off procedures.
  • Landing position.
  • Communication signals during the flight.
  • Emergency procedures.
  • What passengers should and should not do while airborne.

7. Do Not Fly If You Feel Unsafe

Never allow yourself to be pressured into taking a flight.

If you notice:

  • Poorly maintained equipment.
  • Lack of safety checks.
  • Unprofessional behaviour.
  • Unsafe weather conditions.

It is always better to cancel the ride than take unnecessary risks.

Sri Lanka Tourism Guidelines for Paramotoring

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) has published operational guidelines for commercial paramotoring activities to improve passenger safety.

Some of the key recommendations include:

  • Flights should be conducted only by trained and competent pilots.
  • Operators should maintain aircraft in airworthy condition through regular inspections and maintenance.
  • A thorough pre-flight safety inspection should be completed before every flight.
  • Passengers should receive a mandatory safety briefing before take-off.
  • Appropriate safety equipment, including helmets and harnesses, should be provided and properly secured.
  • Flights should only be conducted when weather conditions are suitable for safe operations.
  • Operators should maintain appropriate records, emergency procedures, and risk management practices.

Adventure Tourism Should Always Prioritize Safety

Sri Lanka has become one of Asia’s fastest-growing adventure tourism destinations, offering activities such as whale watching, surfing, scuba diving, hiking, hot-air ballooning, and Para motoring.

While these experiences can be unforgettable, safety should always be the first consideration.

Choosing licensed operators, checking safety standards, listening carefully to pre-flight instructions, and avoiding flights in poor weather can significantly reduce the risks associated with adventure sports.

A few minutes spent asking the right questions before take-off could make all the difference.
