Mattala To Become Hub For Emirates and Qatar Airlines?

Discussions are currently underway between the Sri Lankan government and Emirates and Qatar Airways, to utilize Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) as an alternative transit hub.

This move comes amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted primary aviation networks in the region, said a local news report.

Major airports such as Dubai (DXB), Doha (DOH), and Abu Dhabi (AUH) have experienced operational disruptions due to the ongoing conflict.

The situation has also led to the full or partial closure of civilian airspace in several countries, including Iran, Iraq, and Israel, further complicating global flight operations.

This has situated in Middle Eastern based airlines and other related lines focusing on alternative airports and routes to serve their passengers.

Mattala Airport, located in southeastern Sri Lanka, is strategically positioned along key Indian Ocean east–west aviation corridors, making it a viable alternative.

Despite being operational for over a decade, the airport has seen limited traffic, often being labeled a “white elephant.”

However, its infrastructure makes it suitable for large-scale operations.

The airport features a 3,500-meter runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft, a critical requirement for airlines like Emirates and Qatar Airways.

By using Mattala as a transit hub, airlines could avoid conflict zones while maintaining connections between Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia.

The ongoing disruptions in the Middle East have also impacted Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, as many travelers rely on transit through regional hubs in the Mid-East.

Reduced connectivity has affected tourist arrivals, particularly during the winter season.

If Emirates and Qatar Airways begin operations at Mattala, it could provide a significant boost to Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.

Additionally, it may help reposition Mattala Airport from an underutilized facility into a strategically important aviation hub for the future.
