Indian Tourists Can Make Payments in Sri Lanka using UPI

Indian Tourists to Sri Lanka can now pay using the UPI payment system in Sri Lanka.

This is made possible, as NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) of India collaborated with the LankaPay.

“The introduction of this system, in collaboration with LankaPay, will increase payment options for Indian travelers in Sri Lanka,” has said NIPL, according to local news reports.

The introduction means, Indian tourists can now make digital payments by scanning LankaQR through their UPI, reducing the need to carry excessive cash.

This payment facility is already available at places such as Cinnamon and Taj Hotels, Coffee Chain Barista, Supermarket chain of Keells and retail outlet such as Odel.

India made Unified Payment Interface is a system that empowers users to add multiple bank and other allowed accounts into an UPI, thus making payments easy.

Initially started in India, the system has now expanded to 19 countries.

With the introduction of the system in Sri Lanka, Indian tourists, which is 2025 amounted to over 500,000 gets the opportunity to pay via this system.

India in recent years brought the highest number of tourists to Sri Lanka and the trend may continue to grow in the coming years.
