In little known Kinniya lies water wells with healing power!

,

Just 12 kilometers away from Trincomalee port in Eastern Sri Lanka, which is one of the world’s most natural ports, lies the village of Kinniya.

Kinniya, an otherwise unknown village, is famous among tourists for amazing hot water wells.

There is no tourist who visits the region who will go without visiting the seven square-shaped wells, each about 3 to 4 feet deep.

Each well’s water temperature varies slightly but is generally quite warm, averaging around 42°C.

There is a local beliefthat mineral-rich warm water is helping with joint pain, skin problems, and muscle relaxation.

Science experts say warm water can improve blood circulation, relax muscles, and provide a soothing effect, which might make people feel better temporarily.

The story behind the Kinniya Hot Water Wells is connected with numerous local lore. Some links the origin to King Ravana, a king believed to have been living in Sri Lanka 5000 years ago and ruling the nation.

They say when King Ravana struck the earth, it caused hot water springs to emerge.

Archaeologically, the site is rich; adjacent to the wells are ruins of a Buddhist monastery from the Anuradhapura period (377 BC to 1017 AD), and an inscription found in the area mentions that the nearby tanks were reserved for Buddhist monks.

The government declared the wells as an archaeological monument on 9th September 2011.

The site holds spiritual importance across faiths. Buddhists and Hindus. The Tamils link the place to Koneswaram Temple.

You can visit the springs either through tuk-tuk or car; even buses pass by. It’s just 6 to 8 kilometers from the Trincomalee town.

Entrance is affordable, with basic facilities such as restrooms and changing rooms available.

You will have to take modest attire and a towel and be prepared to scoop water with buckets.

The best time to avoid the crowd will be early morning or late evening.
