How to Trail Sri Lanka’s 300 + KM Pekoe Trail

Sri Lanka’s highly popular Pekoe Trail is a 300+ kilometer long-distance walking trail that runs through the country’s iconic highlands.

It passes through tea plantations, misty forests, diverse villages, waterfalls, and heritage estates and is known as one of the best hikes in Sri Lanka.

The trail is divided into 22 curated stages, designed for both independent and guided hiking. It attracts adventure seekers from around the world, who is eager to do trekking in Sri Lanka.

The best aspect of the journey is that the ‘ones’ who takes on the challenge will see some of the Island’s best attractions along the way, either in closer range or distant range.

The World Famous Horton Plains, The Nine Arch Bridge, The View of the Adam’s Peak, some of Sri Lanka’s iconic Waterfalls, and the Tea Factory such as the Pedro are all along the way.

Apart from the above, there are hidden places in Sri Lanka, which the world has unseen, and the trailers will get the opportunity to witness those attractions too while trekking.

Among those attractions are unseen waterfalls, streams, lakes, mountains and forestry etc.

Best Time For the Trail

The path is open year-round, all 365 days. However, the experience may vary depending on weather conditions and personal preferences.

Sri Lanka Hiking Trails are best done during the following months:

  • December to April
  • July to September

Time Required to Complete the Trail

It takes approximately 16 to 22 days to complete all 22 stages. This depends on factors such as your fitness level, hiking speed, and the time spent on sightseeing.

Can You Do It In Stages?

Yes, you can complete the journey in stages based on your schedule and preferences. You can hike solo, in groups, or with guided tours.

Trail Markings

Most sections of the trail are well marked with signs and information boards. However, it is recommended to use GPS files or mobile apps as backup navigation tools.

Mobile Connectivity

Mobile coverage is available in most areas. However, in valleys and remote sections, signals may be weak or unavailable. Plan accordingly.

Safety and Health

  • Watch for leeches during wet months
  • Avoid hiking alone in remote forested areas
  • Wear sturdy footwear and carry sufficient water
  • Be cautious on wet rocks and steep descents
  • Avoid hiking during thunderstorms
  • Be aware of possible leopard presence (do not run—stay tall and calm)

Water Availability

Sri Lanka is a tropical island, and water is widely available. You can access tap water from nearby homes, shops, or factories. Bottled water is also available for purchase in most areas, including small shops.

Clean water streams are also found along the trail.

Food Availability

Food is available in most areas along the trail, including small shops, local homes, and restaurants.

However, in some remote sections, food may not be available for stretches of 5 to 10 kilometers. It is advisable to carry snacks such as biscuits, buns, fruits, and chocolates.

Accommodation Along the Trail

You can find various accommodation options along the journey, including:

  • Guest houses
  • Homestays
  • Boutique hotels
  • Star-class hotels (near towns)
  • B&B options

Trail Pass

A pass costs US$10 per person per day. The funds are used for trail maintenance, community programs, and safety improvements.

Membership packages are also available:

  • 3-month pass
  • 7-month pass

Children under 12 years do not need a pass.

  • Through participating travel agencies

Do You Need a Guide?

Guides are widely available along the Journey, often through local community support.

Only Walking

The Pekoe Trail is strictly for walking. Biking and motor vehicles are not permitted, ensuring an immersive hiking experience.

  4. Thawalanthanna to Punduluoya – 15.53 km
  5. Punduluoya to Watagoda – 14.31 km
  6. Watagoda to Kotagala – 14.97 km
  7. Kotagala to Norwood – 16.48 km
  8. Norwood to Bogawanthalawa – 15.93 km
  9. Bogawanthalawa to Dayagama – 17.13 km
  10. Dayagama to Horton Plains – 9.86 km
  11. Horton Plains to Udaweriya – 14.30 km
  12. Udaweriya to Haputale – 19.68 km
  13. Haputale to St. Catherine’s – 14.60 km
  14. St. Catherine’s to Makulella – 09.36 km
  15. Makulella to Ella – 9.61 km
  16. Ella to Demodara – 9.50 km
  17. Demodara to Hali Ela – 13.15 km
  18. Hali Ela to Attampitiya – 14.68 km
