How Will You Spend Your ‘One Day’ In Colombo? , Let’s say you are staying in Colombo, preferably near Galle Face Green, Marine Drive, or any nearby location that offers a stunning view of the Indian Ocean. Let’s see, What I will do and you can do the same too. Run Across the Port City Tracks I would start the day at 5:30 AM with a jogging spree at Colombo Port City. The running tracks provide an excellent atmosphere for a morning run, as they stretch alongside the Indian Ocean, offering refreshing sea breeze and beautiful ocean views. Colombo Port City is one of the city’s newest attractions and is rapidly developing into a modern urban destination with restaurants, cafés, duty-free shopping, and several upcoming entertainment venues. A Cup of Tea at a Nearby Street Café By around 7:00 AM, after the run, I would walk past the World Trade Center in Colombo’s Central Business District, located next to Port City, and enjoy the early morning buzz of the city. Of course, no Sri Lankan morning is complete without a cup of Ceylon Tea. I would stop by a nearby street-side café or a tea vendor near the World Trade Center and enjoy a fresh, hot cup of authentic Sri Lankan tea. Breakfast in Colombo Around 8:00 AM, I would return to the hotel, freshen up, and dress in light, comfortable clothing suitable for Colombo’s tropical climate. A hearty breakfast is essential, so make sure to book a hotel with a bed-and-breakfast option. Enjoy authentic Sri Lankan flavours alongside Western breakfast selections, depending on your preference. City Tour – Starting at 10:30 AM For the city tour, I will hire a tuk-tuk and either negotiate a fixed price for a few hours or ensure the driver uses the meter. If you’re in this situation, for added convenience and reliability, you can also use ride-hailing services such as PickMe or Uber, which are widely available in Colombo. Colombo National Museum My first stop will be be the Colombo National Museum, which houses an impressive collection of Sri Lankan history covering several centuries. One of the museum’s highlights is the collection related to Sri Lanka’s last king, Sri Vikrama Rajasinha, including his royal garments and personal belongings. He was captured by the British and exiled to India, where he spent the rest of his life. Around 90 minutes should be enough to explore most of the museum and gain a meaningful historical experience. Independence Memorial Hall The next stop of mine will be Independence Memorial Hall, the location commemorating Sri Lanka’s independence from British colonial rule in 1948. Its elegant architecture, historical significance, and peaceful surroundings make it an ideal place to relax and take memorable photographs. Sri Lanka Cricket Museum Nearby, you will find the Sri Lanka Cricket Museum. The museum showcases some of Sri Lanka’s greatest cricketing achievements, including memorabilia from the 1996 Cricket World Cup and the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup victories. The entrance fee is generally around LKR 500 per person, although prices may vary slightly. Lunch At the corner of Maitland Crescent, near the Sri Lanka Cricket headquarters, you will find several elegant restaurants and cafés. I will stop by one of them for lunch and enjoy quality food at reasonable prices. Red Mosque On My way back toward the hotel, I will make a stop at the famous Red Mosque, officially known as Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, located in Pettah. Built in 1908, it is one of Colombo’s most iconic landmarks, recognized for its striking red-and-white architecture. Rest and Relax By around 3:00 PM, I will return to the hotel, freshen up, and take some time to relax. An hour of rest can help recharge you for the evening ahead. Evening at Galle Face Green Around 5:00 PM, head down to the hotel lobby, order a cup of tea, and unwind for a while. Then walk across the road or a few hundred metres toward the iconic Galle Face Green. The area truly comes alive around 6:00 PM, filled with families, office crowds, couples, tourists, and children enjoying the open atmosphere. I will just walk around, enjoy the cool ocean breeze, sit on one of the benches, and try some popular Sri Lankan street snacks. You can even walk closer to the sea and enjoy the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. Spending two relaxing hours there, with ships visible in the distance across the Indian Ocean, creates a memorable Colombo experience. Dinner There is no need to go elsewhere for dinner. Galle Face Green has plenty of street food stalls and small food outlets offering delicious and economical meals. End of the Day Around 9:00 PM, I will return to the hotel, freshen up, and relax for the remainder of the evening and may be chill out with a ‘very cold beer or two’ with some light music of my own taste. By around 23h00, after a long yet fulfilling day exploring Colombo, it is finally time to hit the pillow. Why Colombo Colombo may not be the largest city in Asia, but it offers a unique blend of history, culture, colonial charm, vibrant street life, and breathtaking ocean views — all within a single day.
