Sri Lanka’s Remote Railway Station Now A key Transit Point! , Ambewela Railway Station is located in a quiet village in the Nuwara Eliya District, a mountainous region in Sri Lanka. From the city of Nuwara Eliya, which is famously known as “Little England”— one must travel about 15 kilometers inward to reach the station. The journey from Nuwaraeliya to the area itself is surrounded by dense forests which is habitat to many wildlife including leopards, one of Sri Lanka’s top predators. The village surrounding the railway station is home to people mainly engaged in vegetable farming, working at the renowned Ambewela Dairy Farms and its processing factory, nearby tea estates, and a few government servants. Until recently, the village was nationally known only for its dairy farm, dairy product processing factory, and the railway station, which is considered one of the highest-elevated in the country. The station is located along Sri Lanka’s iconic upcountry railway line that runs from Colombo to Badulla via Ella. What Is the New Found Significance? Due to significant damage to Sri Lanka’s railway network caused by the recent Cyclone (Ditwah), particularly along the upcountry railway line, train services between Rambukkana and Ambewela is yet to resume. As a result, Ambewela, which was once a quiet station has now become a key transit point for railway commuters traveling to and from Ella and Badulla. “I had to bring my guests from Kandy up to Ambewela to get them on the Ella-bound train. Normally, we would board from Kandy,” said a tour guide whom the writer met at Ambewela Station. He had arrived with a group of tourists who had completed touring key attractions in the northern parts of the country and now wished to experience Sri Lanka’s iconic railway journey, at least from Ambewela to Ella. The railway line from Ambewela to Ella is considered one of the best segment interms of scenic views of the upcountry railway journey, which is one of the world’s best journeys. Typically, tourists begin the upcountry rail journey from Colombo Fort, Peradeniya, Kandy, or Nanu Oya. However, the suspension of train services on parts of the mainline has resulted in Ambewela becoming the primary transit point for the tourists. Currently, the mainline train service from Badulla operates only up to Ambewela twice a day. Train Schedule from Badulla to Ambewela via Ella Two daily trains depart from Badulla Railway Station at 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, reaching Ambewela in approximately 3 hours. Similarly, trains from Ambewela to Badulla also operate at 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, traveling via Ella and arriving in Badulla within 3 hours. In addition, the popular Ella Odyssey train—a premium scenic train experience—operates every Wednesday: From Badulla to Ambewela: Departs at 6:00 PM From Ambewela to Ella and Badulla: Departs at 1:30 PM Despite the shortening of the upcountry rail road owing to rail track restoration work, the writer wishes to recommend travelers looking to enjoy part of the scenic train ride to travel on this route. It still gives you a breathtaking view featuring lush tea plantations, misty mountains, and iconic viewpoints. Increased Activity in Ambewela Station and Surrounding Areas Due to these changes, Ambewela has now become a busy location. “Tourists who comes to explore Nuwaraeliya usually get into the train to go to Ella from Nanuoya, however, as the trains don’t operate from Nanuoya, we have to bring them to Ambewela,” said a hotelier in Nuwaraeliya operating a transport service guests. Nanuoya was the popular transit station before Ditwah, and is closely located to the Nuwaraeliya town, just around few kilometers. Police Deployed At Ambewela Police officers have been deployed to provide security and manage traffic during train arrivals and departures, a seen unheard few months ago in the sleepy village. Vehicles operated by travel agencies and tour guides frequently gather at the station to pick up or drop off tourists. Nearby shops have also seen an increase in business. “Since the Ella–Badulla train services began operating this way, we have seen an increase in our business,” said a small-scale hotel owner who now caters to more tourist demand. “However, this is not long-term. Once the mainline train services are restored, our business will likely decline.” He further added. Tourists Exploring the Area Tourists who arrive early—due to the limited number of buses from major cities—often spend time exploring the village while waiting for the next train. The writer observed couples, solo travelers, and groups sitting in nearby boutiques, drinking tea, smoking, or dining at small local eateries until train arrival times. Ambewela Station sits at an elevation of 1,848 meters above sea level and is one of the quietest railway stations, located close to wilderness areas. Horton Plains National Park borders the region, and wildlife such as leopards are known to roam nearby. For now, however, Ambewela has become a major transit hub for thousands of tourists traveling to Ella and Badulla or returning to other parts of the country. Once the upcountry fully restores, Ambewela may go back to become the sleepy village, once it was.
