Sri Lanka Focus On Malaysian Tourists as Batik Launches Colombo–KL Flights

Sri Lanka is stepping up efforts to attract Malaysian tourists following the launch of Batik Air’s direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Colombo.

The launch marks a significant boost in connectivity between the two countries, along with other airlines already operating between the two destinations.

Batik Air’s inaugural flights to Colombo and Vice Versa saw a total of 222 passengers.

The arrival flight from Kuala Lumpur carried 62 passengers, while the outbound flight from Colombo to Kuala Lumpur had 160 passengers.

The Malaysian carrier is expected to operate four weekly flights on this route, strengthening both tourism and business ties.

Batik Air, headquartered at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, operates across Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

With this addition, the Airline joins other airlines already serving the Colombo–Kuala Lumpur route, including SriLankan , Malaysian , AirAsia, and FitsAir.

The business community has welcomed the development.

Harsha Purasinghe, a prominent Sri Lankan tech leader, praised the move on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Batik Air had previously operated flights to Sri Lanka but suspended services in March 2024.

The recent relaunch signals renewed confidence in the route.

Boosting Malaysian Tourism to Sri Lanka

The move aligns with Sri Lanka’s strategy to increase tourist arrivals from Malaysia, which currently remains relatively low.

In 2025, Malaysian visitors accounted for just 2,248 arrivals, approximately 0.9% of total tourist inflows to the country.

To encourage more Malaysian travelers, Sri Lanka has introduced a visa-free entry scheme.

Malaysian nationals holding Diplomatic, Official, Public Affairs, Service, or Ordinary passports can enter Sri Lanka without paying visa fees.

However, travelers are still required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to arrival.

Tourist visas are typically issued for up to 30 days.

Industry Context

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is increasingly focusing on attracting visitors from the Asia-Pacific region.

This shift comes amid disruptions in the Middle East, where partial and full airport closures have impacted travel flows.

These disruptions have particularly affected European tourist arrivals, one of Sri Lanka’s key markets, due to reduced connectivity through Middle Eastern transit hubs.

The resumption of direct flights like Batik Air’s Colombo–KL service is expected to play a crucial role in diversifying tourist sources and supporting the Sri Lanka’s travel industry.
