Today the airline increased its weekly flights between Istanbul and Colombo from 8 to 9. The move comes amidst increasing demand for travel between the two destinations. During the upcoming European winter season, the airline will increase up to 10 weekly flights, says the Aviation Voice, a news portal covering the sector. The move is expected to help strengthen tourism, trade, and diplomatic ties between Sri Lanka and Turkey. The initiative is also seen as a step towards capitalizing on Istanbul Airport’s strategic positioning in the region, as Europeans use the airport to connect with Asia, including Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s national carrier, SriLankan Airlines, also operates direct flights between the two destinations. During the year 2024, nearly 589,000 European tourists arrived in Sri Lanka; many travel to Sri Lanka during the winter season of Europe.
