Sri Lanka’s Iconic Kandy City Becomes More Attractive as Pavements Are Cleared of Street Vendors

Sri Lanka’s Tourist City Gets a Boost – Here How..

,

Sri Lanka’s iconic Tourist city of Kandy, a world-famous destination of cultural and religious significance, is taking further steps to enhance its urban appeal.

Accordingly, authorities have removed all street vendors and unauthorized structures from the city’s pavements.

Most of those structures had been established by temporary traders.

As a result, pavements are now fully accessible for pedestrians, allowing free and uninterrupted movement.

This initiative has also contributed to restoring a cleaner and more pleasant environment around the Kandy Lake.

“Very well done. Now pedestrians can walk on the pavements without any disturbances,” said Zahran Careem in a post on his X account.

Kandy is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sacred Tooth Relic, which remains one of Sri Lanka’s most significant tourist attractions.

“I lived in Kandy for 20 years, and this is definitely eye-candy to watch. A great initiative,” said Dushmantha Ranatunga, a native of the city.

Sri Lankan cities are highly regarded by tourists for their cleanliness and the strong civic sense displayed by the public.

This latest move is expected to further enhance the city’s reputation.

It remains unclear whether similar measures will be implemented across the island.

Over the years, successive governments have taken various initiatives to keep streets free of unauthorized structures.

They have and is still exploring alternative ways to support street vendors, such as establishing dedicated market spaces for those vendors.
