Sri Lanka’s famous ‘Kottu Roti’ at the Oxford English Dictionary!

,

Sri Lanka’s beloved street food, Kottu Roti, has officially been added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) — a proud moment for the island nation and its vibrant culinary heritage!

According to the OED, Kottu Roti is defined as:
“A Sri Lankan dish consisting of pieces of roti, meat, and vegetables, mixed with spices and curry sauce, and chopped by cleavers as they are cooked on a griddle.”
The entry highlights the dish’s signature rhythm:
“This dish is typically associated with the distinctive sound of the cleavers hitting the griddle as it is prepared by roadside vendors.”

Other Sri Lankan Culinary Icons Now in the OED:

🍮 Watalappam
A rich, spiced custard dessert, traditionally enjoyed by Sri Lankan Muslims during Eid celebrations.
OED Definition:
“A custard made from coconut milk (or sometimes condensed milk), cashew nuts, eggs, and spices such as cardamom and cloves, sweetened with jaggery.”

🥬 Mallung
A classic side dish made by lightly cooking shredded greens with fresh grated coconut and spices.
A staple at almost every Sri Lankan meal.

🍚 Kiribath
A ceremonial dish of rice cooked in coconut milk and sliced into diamond-shaped pieces.
Served on auspicious occasions, including Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

A Taste of Sri Lanka in Every Word
These additions reflect not just the food, but the culture, history, and everyday life of Sri Lankans. For anyone visiting the island, these dishes are an absolute must-try — not just for the taste, but for the experience, the stories, and the heritage they carry.

In the meantime @SLHCinLondon, the official ‘X’ account of Sri Lankan High Commission in Lond has acknowledge the contribution of Ms. Rochana Jayasinghe, OEDs Consultant for SL English, for the latest addition.

@OED has added several SL words in its June 2025 update. We acknowledge the contribution of Rochana Jayasinghe, OED’s Consultant for SL English, proudly noting that she now serves as the Communications Specialist @SLHCinLondon” it said.
