Sri Lankan Drivers Powered By Google – Check It Out Now! , Google Maps has launched real-time condition alerts on Sri Lanka’s A- and B-grade roads, according to Minister of Transport Bimal Rathnayake. Under this initiative, Google will update 12,000 kilometers of main roads and provide six types of alerts. The alerts confirmed so far include lane closures and construction work. In addition, Google Maps globally provides updates for: Road blocks / obstructions / objects on the road Traffic slowdowns, congestion, and traffic jams Accidents and crashes Weather-related hazards, low visibility, and flooded roads These types of alerts may also apply to Sri Lanka. “The pilot project aims to help travelers plan routes more efficiently, avoid unexpected delays, and improve road safety,” the Minister said on X. “This will be a big help to plan your trips better, save time, and avoid unexpected traffic,” Rathnayake added. The announcement comes at a time when Sri Lanka is working to restore its heavily damaged road network following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwa. However, Google itself has not issued a public statement about this rollout, and many users on social media claim the feature has existed for a long time. It is also unclear whether this initiative follows a formal agreement between the Road Development Authority (RDA) and Google. What is certain, however, is that Google Maps now provides real-time condition alerts in Sri Lanka—welcome news for all travelers. Read more: Card Payments in Sri Lanka – What You Need to Know?
