The situation has brought the country to a standstill with over 40 people losing their lives, while thousands of families have been displaced. All state institutions have been closed, railway services have been suspended, and government examinations — including the ongoing Advanced Level examination — have been postponed. Even private sector organizations have announced temporary closures due to the worsening conditions. Waters levels in the reservoirs keep rising with fluid gates of majority opened up thus causing floods in the lower levels. Government agencies and security forces are continuing with recovery and relief measures. SRI LANKA TOURISM AUTHORITIES OPENS HOTLINE Sri Lanka Tourism Authorities have set up a 24-hour hotline to help tourists in the country, amidst adverse weather conditions prevailing in the country. The 24-hour hotel, 1912, is available for visitors to call in any given emergency. It is reported that tourists are stranded in weather hit areas and unable to move in. The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority says steps have been taken to look after the tourists in the country and be ready for action in case of an emergency. Authorities request tourists to arrive in the country and enjoy the island, despite the current weather conditions.
