How to Protect You From Sri Lanka ‘Heat’ , Sri Lankan weather officials have issued a ‘Caution Level’ for provinces across the country to be alert to the ‘Heat Index. This cautioning comes as ‘extreme heat’ that is waving across the country is seen as a health hazard by medical experts. The heat index, or the temperature felt by the human body, is expected to reach the cautionary level in some areas of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Eastern, Northwestern, Northern, and North Central Provinces, as well as in the Monaragala District. The consideration of the heat index is taken by assessing both the air temperature and relative humidity, which impacts the human body, depending on the ‘heat levels.’ Heath experts caution to be extra cautious and vigilant by staying hydrated by consuming water or beverages such as King Coconut, fresh orange juice, or Jeewani. Experts also advise the public to wear loose, light-colored clothing to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours. Tourists travelling across the country too should take extra precautions by carrying adequate water or beverage items, wearing light clothes, and as much as possible ‘staying’ inside when you’re not travelling. Sri Lanka is currently experiencing a surge in winter tourist arrivals. Despite the Middle Eastern conflict, tourists still arrive in numbers. During the first 25 days of March, Sri Lanka has received 151,963 tourists to the country. The highest number came from India, with 39,424 visitors. Tourists from the UK and Russia arrived, 13,967 and 13,272 tourists, respectively. China ranked fourth with 12,166 arrivals. Germany brought in 10,523 visitors, while from Australia, the country received 8,522 tourists. France, the USA, and Japan collectively have brought in around 16,000 visitors. Despite the Heat Warning for majority of the Districts, applicable until 30th March, Districts such as Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Matale and Badulla are excluded from the warning.
