How to Invest in the Sri Lankan Stock Market in 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide

,

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) is more accessible than most people think — you don’t need to be in Sri Lanka, and in most cases you don’t need to visit a broker’s office in person anymore.

Here’s exactly how the process works in 2026, whether you’re a Sri Lankan resident, a member of the diaspora, or a foreign investor discovering the CSE for the first time.

Who can invest in the CSE?

Three categories, each with a slightly different account type:

  • Resident Sri Lankans — open a standard CDS account
  • Non-resident Sri Lankans (diaspora) — open a “Foreign Individual” (FI) CDS account
  • Foreign nationals — also open an FI account, with an additional banking requirement (below)

Step 1: Understand the two accounts you’ll need

Every investor in the CSE needs a CDS (Central Depository System) account — this is where your shares are held electronically.

Sri Lanka has no physical share certificates anymore; everything is dematerialized and tracked by the CDS.

If you’re a non-resident or foreign investor, you’ll also need either an Inward Investment Account (IIA) or a Capital Transaction Rupee Account (CTRA) with a licensed Sri Lankan commercial bank.

This is the account your investment funds flow through, and it’s what lets you legally remit dividends and repatriate your capital later. Opening a Foreign Individual CDS account requires an Inward Investment Account as a mandatory prerequisite. Cds

Step 2: Choose a licensed stockbroker

You can’t trade directly on the Colombo Stock Exchange — you need a broker (or custodian bank) to execute trades on your behalf.

The CDS currently works with 28 broker participant firms and 18 custodian banks. Look for one that offers full digital onboarding if you’re not physically in Sri Lanka — most major firms now do. Investsrilanka

Step 3: Open your CDS account (fully online since 2023)

This is the part that’s changed most since older guides were written. You can now open a CDS account entirely online through the CSE Mobile App or web portal — download the app, and start the process from there. Cds

For non-residents specifically: once you enter a foreign mobile number into the CSE Mobile App, the system automatically categorizes you as a foreign individual and routes you through the correct application path. Cds

Foreign investors submit their passport details, bank account details, and supporting documents online, and receive an acknowledgement notification by email once the application is submitted.

Account approval typically takes 2–3 working days, depending on how complete your documents are. CdsCds

A few practical details worth knowing:

  • There is no charge to open a CDS account. Cds
  • You cannot hold more than one CDS account with the same stockbroker, but you can open accounts with different brokers if needed. Cds
  • You can’t add nominees during account opening — that’s done later through the CDS e-Connect facility, available on both the mobile app and web portal. Cds

Step 4: Fund your account and place your first trade

Once approved, you’ll transfer funds through your IIA/CTRA (for foreign/non-resident investors) or your regular bank account (residents).

From there, you place buy/sell instructions through your broker — either by phone, through their trading platform, or via the CSE’s own systems depending on what your broker offers.

Step 5: Track your investment

Check share prices and market activity regularly — by calling your stockbroker, checking daily newspapers, or visiting the Colombo Stock Exchange website or your broker’s platform.

You’ll also receive a monthly CDS statement for any month in which your account had activity — a purchase, sale, deposit, or withdrawal. SecSec

What it costs

Brokerage fees vary slightly by firm, but a typical rate is around 0.64% per trade for amounts under LKR 100 million, covering the broker, CSE, and CDS fees combined, with no separate monthly platform fee for standard stock trading. benzinga

A quick word on IPOs

If you want to invest in a company at its initial listing rather than buying on the open market: a prospectus is available free of charge from the stockbroker or company managing the issue, and any investor over 18 can apply.

Make sure your CDS account number and National Identity Card number are correctly included on the application form. SecSec

Is this the right investment for you?

The CSE, like any equity market, carries real risk — share prices move, and unlike a fixed deposit, your principal isn’t guaranteed.

Fixed deposits are often seen by Sri Lankans as low-risk since the principal doesn’t fluctuate, but they still carry default risk from the issuing bank and lose value to inflation over time — equities offer a different risk/return trade-off tied to long-term company growth. Cfasocietysrilanka
