How to Get a Mobile Connection Upon Arrival

,

Sri Lanka offers some of the best mobile connectivity in South Asia, with wide coverage across most parts of the island.

With a population of just over 22 million, the country’s mobile market is structured as an oligopoly, dominated by four main operators.

Dialog, Mobitel, Airtel, and Hutch are Among them, and Dialog and Mobitel provide the widest coverage, making them the most popular choices for both locals and travelers.

How You Can Get a SIM at the Airport

  • Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo) has official counters for the main telecom providers: Dialog, Mobitel, Airtel, and Hutch.
  • These counters are located in the arrivals area, just after customs.
  • Staff will help you select a tourist SIM package, usually including data, local calls, and international call minutes.
  • You’ll need to show your passport for registration  which is mandatory in Sri Lanka.
  • The SIM is activated immediately, and you can start using it before leaving the airport.

How You Can Get a Sim From the Hotel

  • Most big hotels in Colombo and other tourist hubs have partnerships with mobile providers.
  • Reception can either:
    • Arrange for a SIM card delivery to the hotel.
    • Or guide you to the nearest telecom shop.
  • The process is the same: show your passport, pick a package, and activate on the spot.

3. Things to Know

  • Coverage: Dialog and Mobitel have the best nationwide coverage, especially in rural areas.
  • Packages: Tourist SIMs usually range from USD 5–15, with generous data and call bundles.
  • Top-Up: You can recharge at supermarkets, convenience stores, mobile shops, or online apps.
  • eSIM: Dialog and Mobitel also offer eSIMs if your phone supports it.
