Good News for Travelers as More Airlines Resume Direct Flights to Sri Lanka

Starting this winter, flying to Sri Lanka is set to get even easier for holiday seekers.

Travelers heading to Sri Lanka now have the option of travelling directly from many destinations, without stopping over in Dubai, Doha, or Abu Dhabi en route to the island nation.

This is thanks to a new wave of air carriers connecting to Sri Lanka via direct flights.

Gatwick to Colombo

British Airways returns to Colombo on 23 October, restoring a non-stop link to London Gatwick.

This is significant, as the UK remains one of Sri Lanka’s strongest and most loyal source markets, and a direct flight removes a genuine point of friction for travelers.

This means a journey between the two destinations will take just 10 hours direct, compared to as much as 15 to 18 hours via transit.

Edelweiss Air

The Lufthansa Group service will connect Zurich with Colombo three times a week via direct flights starting 26 October.

This means high-spending Swiss and DACH-region travelers will be able to fly from Zurich to Colombo in around 10 hours.

French Bee

Also worth noting is French Bee’s Paris–Colombo service, launching in December.

The airline is targeting a cost-conscious but committed segment of the French long-haul travel market.

Asia-Pacific Airlines

Marking a first, another key development is the launch of two Vietnamese air services to Sri Lanka.

Both Vietnam Airlines and VietJet will connect Colombo directly with Ho Chi Minh City.

This opens a new corridor for Asia-Pacific travelers to visit Sri Lanka.

This growing Asian connectivity will be further supported by Beijing Capital Airlines and Batik Air, both of which are expected to expand capacity to Sri Lanka — meaning more tourists from Malaysia and China.

Australia, and the Low-Cost Gap It Fills

The recent entry of Jetstar from Australia is expected to strengthen connectivity between Sri Lanka and Australia.

Jetstar will fly non-stop between Melbourne and Colombo, operating three times weekly, year-round, using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet.

The Bigger Picture

Some of these airlines are budget-focused, others seasonal, but all of them offer business-class or premium-economy-style cabins and operate modern, widebody aircraft.

The arrival of airlines such as British Airways — one of the best in the world — along with Jetstar and French Bee, key operators trusted in their respective markets, is excellent news for Sri Lanka and for travelers planning a visit to the island.

Direct Flights, Direct Benefits

Sri Lanka was once a destination Europeans and other travelers could only reach via transit. Now, direct flights from key markets are cutting down travel time and adding real convenience.

This shift also strengthens Sri Lanka’s positioning as a year-round destination.
