The United States, Thailand, Switzerland, Hong Kong, the UAE, India, France, the UK, Singapore, and Macure are the main buyers of Sri Lankan gemstones.

The craftsmanship of the country’s master gem cutters has also contributed to swelling its reputation as one of the leading destinations for precious colored stones.

Sri Lanka’s export earnings from the sector touched around US$ 280 million during the year 2024.

Nearly 300,000 people are employed in the sector, and it is estimated that nearly 70 percent of Sri Lanka’s landmass consists of Gem.
