Bus Service Connecting Colombo Airport with the Expressways

Sri Lanka launches a new bus service connecting the Colombo Airport (BIA) with the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Center (MMC).

The new service will enable tourists and Sri Lankans returning from overseas to conveniently travel to their destinations using the country’s public transport network.

A total of 16 buses will operate daily from the airport and vice versa.

The first bus will depart at 5:15 a.m. and from there onwards every 45 minutes a bus will depart from the Colombo Airport ( BIA) to Makumbura Multimodel Center.

The final bus from the airport to Makumbura Multimodal Transport Center will depart at 6:30 p.m.

Similarly, bus services from the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Center will commence at 5:15 a.m., while the last bus of the day will leave for the airport at 7:50 p.m.

About the Makumbura Multimodal Center

The Makumbura Multimodal Center (MMC), located in Kottawa, is Sri Lanka’s first integrated public transport hub and is highly popular among commuters seeking convenient travel options.

The center seamlessly connects long-distance expressway buses, local and city bus services, and the Kelani Valley railway line.

This integrated system helps reduce traffic congestion while providing a smoother and more efficient commuting experience for passengers travelling to and from Colombo.

The distance between Bandaranaike International Airport and the Makumbura Multimodal Center is approximately 50 kilometers.

The Travel time between the two destinations are around 50 minutes via the expressway.

The center provides direct access to several of Sri Lanka’s key expressway networks, including:

• The Southern Expressway, connecting passengers to Galle, Matara, Hambantota, and other destinations in the Southern Province.
• The Central Expressway, providing access to Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and the central regions of the country, such as Kandy.
• The Colombo–Katunayake Expressway, which links Colombo with Bandaranaike International Airport and also nearby tourism areas such as Negombo.

Apart from the above services, buses are also operating between Airport and Colombo Fort ( Bus Number 187) thus connecting visitors with the country’s Central Business District.

Passengers arriving from Colombo Airport to the Fort can use the country’s main railway station, which operates trains to all destinations of the country.

While the Fort Bus Stations too operate large number of buses to destinations across the country.

With these connections, the Makumbura Multimodal Center serves as a vital transportation gateway for visitors.
