Ritigala – A Hidden Mystery, History and More , Ritigala is a place where mystery, history, and rich environmental diversity come together. It is the highest forest-covered mountain in the northern part of Sri Lanka and is deeply connected to the island’s ancient history. Located about 43 kilometers from Anuradhapura, this story has a recorded history dating back to the 1st century BCE. The mountain consists of four peaks, divided into northern and southern blocks. The highest peak, Ritigala Kanda, lies in the southern block. Rising to766 meters (2,513 feet) above sea level, it is the highest mountain in northern Sri Lanka. One of its most intriguing aspects is its association with powerful medicinal herbs, believed to grow near the mountain’s crest. According to legend, a herb known as “Sansevi” is said to possess the ability to cure all human ailments and confer long life. Folklore also claims that the vegetation of Ritigala is protected by Yakkas, the guardian spirits of the mountain. Some say, the Yakkas are often believed to represent the island’s ancient aboriginal inhabitants. The mountain and its sorroundings is also home to significant archaeological heritage, including 74 ancient caves that still exist today. In addition, around 174 historical inscriptions have been discovered on cave walls and stone surfaces across the mountain, offering insights into Sri Lanka’s early civilization. An Ancient Buddhist Monastery has been existing at Ritigala and the archeology shows evidence. Declared a protected forest reserve, Ritigala supports remarkable biodiversity. It is home to approximately 418 plant species, including 338 flowering plants, with 113 species typically found in Sri Lanka’s wet zone, despite its dry-zone location. The area also shelters about 97 species of birds, along with wildlife such as elephants and leopards. Visitors can explore the remains of the ancient forest monastery, a unique and rewarding experience, combining spirituality, history, and nature in a serene setting. HOW TO VISIT RITIGALA Ritigala is located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province and can be visited throughout the year. Though the best experience depends on weather conditions and planning. It is situated about 43 km from Anuradhapura, the nearest Major town, which is a key tourism base. From Anurdhapura to Ritigala is about 1.5 hours by road. Public Transport is available, either by bus or taxi. However, from the Bus Stop, Visitors can use the Three-Wheeler or Tax to reach the Ritigala entrance. Visitors must obtain an entry ticket at the Forest Department Ticket Counter at the entrance. Guides are not compulsory but are recommended, especially for first-time visitors. The ideal time to visit is early morning (6.30 am – 10.00 am). The best period between May and September is generally suitable, as trails are less slippery.
