No Driving License for Tuk-Tuks for visitors

Driving in Sri Lanka without a valid driving license will be breaking the law warns Sri Lanka Police for the tourists visiting the country and wants to ‘Self Drive.’

It says, all tourists must possess a valid driving document recognized by Sri Lankan authorities.

It has to be either an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a Domestic Driving License from the visitors ‘Home Country’ which is validated by the Motor Traffic Department of Sri Lanka.

Self-Driving, without a valid document will be deemed as illegal and subject to legal action, said the Police Spokesman, ASP F.U Wootler.

 Where to Obtain

Foreign visitors can get their license upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Colombo:

BIA has already established a Department of Motor Traffic Counter near the Arrival Walkway (next to SPAR Supermarket).

Tourists can pay a sum of Rs. 2,000 to obtain a once, which will be valid for a period of one month.

No Tuk-Tuks for Tourists

However, Wootler emphasized that tourists driving tuk-tuks is strictly prohibited and considered illegal under local traffic laws.

The latest warning aims to enhance the tourist safety, ensure compliance with national traffic laws and prevent ‘accidents.’
