Sri Lanka Airport opens 14 new check-in counters , The move aims to ease out tourist ‘Check-Ins’ Sri Lanka’s main international airport in Colombo has opened 14 new check-in counters to better accommodate the influx of winter tourists arriving in the country. The move aims to reduce passenger waiting times during the busy winter holiday season, both for arrivals and departures. Sri Lanka experiences a significant increase in tourist arrivals during this period—particularly from Europe, as travelers seek the island’s warm tropical climate, golden beaches, vibrant wildlife, and rich natural landscapes. During the first nine months of 2025, Sri Lanka welcomed 1.73 million tourists, marking a 16.2% year-on-year increase. While the majority of visitors came from neighboring India, there was also a substantial rise in long-haul travelers from Europe and the United Kingdom. In preparation for the winter travel season, several European airlines have resumed or increased flight frequencies to Colombo over the past two months. The European winter season typically runs from November to March, aligning with Sri Lanka’s peak tourist period. The initiative at the airport is part of a joint effort between Sri Lanka Tourism and Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited. It is aimed at improving travel convenience and enhancing the overall visitor experience. Read more: No Visa Fees!
