‘Dondra Point’ Sri Lanka – What’s so special about it

Sri Lanka has two famous geographic landmarks — Point Pedro in Jaffna, and the Dondra Point in the South.

Point Pedro covers northernmost tip of the island facing the Indian Ocean, and Dondra Point stands as the southernmost point of the country, once again gazing across the vast Indian Ocean.

The distance between these two iconic points, if measured in a straight line, is approximately 432 kilometers.

However, if you choose to travel by road, the journey stretches to around 552 kilometers, offering a scenic journey from north to south across the length of the island.

Dondra, located in the Matara District, is not only significant for marking Sri Lanka’s southernmost tip but also for its collection of nearby attractions that can be explored within just a few kilometers.

Visitors can experience nearly 10 beautiful spots within a 2–3 kilometer radius of Dondra Point.

They are accessible by foot, bicycle, tuk-tuk, car, bus, or van.

From historic temples and scenic beaches to the famous Dondra Lighthouse and local fishing harbours, the area offers a perfect blend of heritage, culture, and coastal charm.

1. Dondra Head Lighthouse

Distance: 0 km (right at Dondra Point)
Highlight: One of the tallest lighthouses in South Asia, built by the British in 1890.
Details: Standing 49 meters tall, this white octagonal tower offers stunning ocean views. It marks the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka.
Tip: Visit during sunrise or sunset for excellent photography.

2. Devinuwara (Dondra) Vishnu Temple

Distance: ~500 meters from the lighthouse
Highlight: An ancient and sacred Buddhist–Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu (known locally as “Upulvan”).
Details: The temple has a long history dating back to the Anuradhapura era. Pilgrims visit year-round, and the annual Devinuwara Perahera Festival (July/August) is a major cultural event.
Tip: Dress modestly and observe local customs when entering the temple.

3. Dondra Beach

Distance: Around 200–500 meters around the lighthouse
Highlight: A quiet and scenic coastal stretch with calm waters and rocky formations.
Details: Perfect for peaceful walks, photography, and watching fishing boats at dawn or dusk. The waters near the point are deep, so swimming is limited to calm days.

4. Galge Beach (Rocky Shoreline)

Distance: ~1 km north of the lighthouse
Highlight: A rocky coastal area popular among locals for fishing and seaside picnics.
Details: Offers beautiful views of the ocean and natural rock pools at low tide.

5. Galge Raja Maha Viharaya

Distance: ~1.5 km inland from Dondra Point
Highlight: A small, serene Buddhist temple surrounded by greenery.
Details: Known for its calm atmosphere and ancient stone carvings typical of southern Sri Lankan temple architecture.

6. Uthpalawanna Sri Vishnu Devalaya (Main Shrine Complex)

Distance: ~1.2 km from the lighthouse
Highlight: The main shrine complex of Lord Vishnu in Devinuwara.
Details: This beautifully maintained temple complex features traditional Kandyan-style roofs, sculptures, and religious art. It’s part of the broader Devinuwara Sacred Area.

7. Kudawella Fishing Harbour (Mini Port)

Distance: ~2.5 km east of Dondra Point
Highlight: A small local fishing harbour with colourful boats and a glimpse into coastal life.
Details: Early morning (around 6:00 a.m.) is the best time to see fishermen unloading their catch of the day.

8. Hummanaya Blowhole Viewpoint (Hidden Spot by Locals)

Distance: ~2.5–3 km west towards Makandura
Highlight: A natural rock formation where sea spray jets upward during high tide (a small version of the Hummanaya Blowhole).
Details: Not a major tourist spot but known locally for its scenic sea view and powerful ocean waves.

9. Coastal Walking & Cycling Path (Dondra–Matara stretch)

Distance: Begins from Dondra Point and extends up to 3 km north
Highlight: A beautiful coastal path ideal for short walks or cycling.
Details: You’ll pass temples, small fishing villages, and viewpoints overlooking the Indian Ocean.
