Sri Lanka’s 19th Century Railway Station Upgraded by the Bohra Community – But Why?

Sri Lanka’s Bambalapitiya Railway Station, a key railway station in the capital, Colombo, has received a major facelift.

The renovation has seen the station, an important part of the country’s Southern Rail network, receive upgraded platforms, improved water and sanitary facilities, the installation of CCTV cameras, a new overhead bridge, and several other modern facilities.

The project is part of Sri Lanka’s broader efforts to modernise 100 rail stations across the country, which are widely used by both local commuters and international travellers.

The upgrade of Bambalapitiya Station has been funded by Sri Lanka’s Dawoodi Bohra community, with an investment of Rs. 60 million.

Why the Bohra Community and Why Bambalapitiya?

Bambalapitiya holds particular significance for the Dawoodi Bohra community in Sri Lanka, serving as a central hub for its religious, social, and civic activities in Colombo.

Last year, the community organised the Ashara Mubaraka 2025 commemorations in Colombo, which saw more than 15,000 members of the Dawoodi Bohra community arrive in Sri Lanka from over 20 countries.

The Husaini Masjid in Bambalapitiya serves as a key location during such major global gatherings of the community held in Colombo.

Sri Lanka is home to around 500 Dawoodi Bohra families, spread across Colombo, Jaffna, Bandarawela, Badulla, and several other regions. Over the years, the community has become an integral part of Sri Lankan society.

Bambalapitiya Railway Station

Established in the 19th century, Bambalapitiya Railway Station remains an important part of Colombo’s coastal railway network.

It connects key residential and commercial areas of the city and serves one of Colombo’s busiest and most vibrant neighbourhoods.

On weekdays, Bambalapitiya Railway Station is among the busiest railway stations in the country, serving thousands of daily commuters travelling to and from Colombo.
