Tourists From Asia Pacific: Easy Focus For Sri Lanka

Tourists From Asia Pacific: Easy Focus For Sri Lanka

,

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is looking to expand its basket by focusing on attracting tourists from the Asia-Pacific region.

The Sri Lankan travel and tourism industry is seeking to diversify tourist arrivals to the country in order to avoid overdependence on specific regions or countries.

As part of this strategy, discussions have emerged about attracting more tourists from Asia-Pacific markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and other nearby countries.

This initiative comes in response to the impact the country is currently experiencing due to the Middle Eastern crisis.

The crisis has resulted in thousands of tourists from Europe cancelling or delaying their travel plans to Sri Lanka, mainly because many flights transit through Middle Eastern hubs.

Last year, Sri Lanka received 212,277 tourists from the United Kingdom, 147,966 from Germany, and 109,041 from France.

A large proportion of these travelers fly to Sri Lanka via transit hubs such as Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi.

However, these hubs are currently affected due to the ongoing Middle Eastern crisis.

“You can see that due to this crisis, multiple source markets have been disrupted. This is why our tourism basket needs to be diversified,” said a travel expert who studies tourism trends and patterns.

Experts say tourists from countries such as India, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and other nearby Asia-Pacific markets can travel to Sri Lanka via direct flights or short-haul routes.

Importantly, these markets are not directly affected by the current crisis.

“We’ve spent years depending on Gulf carriers to deliver tourists. Our entire inbound tourism strategy was built around three transit hubs that are now located in a conflict zone,” an X  user commented on the issue.

At present, India, China, and Bangladesh are the only Asian countries among Sri Lanka’s top 10 tourism source markets.

However, experts believe that arrivals from other Asia-Pacific countries could be significantly increased through a targeted and strategic tourism promotion approach.
