'Barmy Army' and its Colombo Invasion!

Barmy Army and its Colombo Invasion!

,

Thousands of members of the Barmy Army, the England cricket team’s famous cheer group, have taken over the streets of Colombo.

The group, which follows the England cricket team around the world, is not only attending matches but also touring the city and enjoying everything it has to offer.

They seem to be enjoying every bit of the experience—visiting historic landmarks, walking through the streets, taking in local attractions, and, of course, enjoying a few beers along the way.

Among the places they have visited is Sri Lanka’s historic Independence Square, the very location where British rulers formally handed over the country to Sri Lankans in 1948.

Nelum Kuluna, also known as the Lotus Tower, is another major attraction visited by the Barmy Army.

It is reported that over 2000 Britishers are here for Cricket and Holiday.

A Travel operator said, “The numbers would have been high if not for England’s recent tours to Australia for the Ashes and New Zealand, before the Ashes.“

The visitors are staying at various locations across Colombo.

Some are housed at the iconic Galle Face Hotel, which hosts the traditional Sunset Flag Lowering Ceremony every evening.

The bustling Pettah Market, the city’s main commercial hub, has also been on their itinerary.

An ‘X’ post by the Barmy Army mentioned a visit to the “British Museum.”

However, it is unclear which museum they refer to, as Colombo does not have a British Museum.

Some members of the group have also visited the Cricket Café in Colombo, a popular hangout among cricket lovers.

The café reflects how deeply cricket is rooted in Sri Lankan culture, a game originally introduced by the ancestors of the Barmy Army themselves.

The tour continues, as the Barmy Army is set to travel to the hill country for England’s T20I series against Sri Lanka.

The series will be played in Kandy, the city where the British captured the last King of Sri Lanka and deported him to India.

This event marked the beginning of British rule over the entire island and brought an end to Sri Lanka’s era of kingdoms.

The British Ruled Sri Lanka for over 152 years.

Now their Children have arrived with an ‘Army’ of-course to enjoy the country, culture, attractions and people.
