Sri Lanka Unveils Its Rare Star Sapphire

Star Sapphire weighing around 3,563 carats which is claimed to be the world’s biggest of its kind was unveiled to the world today by the owners.

The owners, say they are looking for buyers to purchase the stone, worth around USD 300 million.

“The round shaped gem named “Star of Pure Land” is the world’s largest documented natural purple star sapphire”, said Ashan Amarasinghe, a consultant gemologist.

“This is the largest purple star sapphire of its kind,” he told the media,

According to him, gem “shows a well-defined asterism.

“It has six rays asterism. That’s something special out of all the other stones,” added Amarasinghe.

The gem, which has been polished, is owned by the Star of Pure Land Team, who want to remain anonymous owing to security reasons.

The gem has been found in a gem pit near the remote town of Ratnapura, which is famously known as the ‘City of Gems’

The owners have purchased the stone along with a bulk of others, stone, but later found it a very special stone.

The Gem is given authentication by two laboratories, including a valuation of around USD 300 million to $400 million by international valuers.

Sri Lankan sapphires are renowned for their unique color, clarity and shimmer.

It is a famous story that doing the rounds are Princess Diana wore a ring made out of Sri Lankan Blue Sapphires, on her wedding day.
