It will also automatically detect invalid or fraudulent documents, thus ensuring the safety and security of the passengers using the BIA, Katunayake.

According to the Airport and Aviation Services Sri Lanka Private Limited, the new e-gates are implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and funded by Japan.

The project is part of IOM’s ‘Border Health’ program.

Once built, the facility will contain e-gates, upgraded sensor-equipped washroom facilities, advanced baggage scanners, trolley tug pushers, and other essential health and safety equipment.

Katunayake is Sri Lanka’s main airport and is situated just closer to the capital, Colombo.

It links Colombo, the capital, and the tourism hot spots such as Kalutara, Galle, and Matara in South Sri Lanka via the Express-ways.

The central expressway, which links Colombo with the central parts of the country, is just 45 minutes away from the BIA airport.
